On Friday 25 March our usual Ramp Jam was a little different: we decided to have some bands do the jamming!

We thought we would trace the steps of our very own store guy, Matty Charles, who was slinging drinks allll night to get an insight through the eyes of one of our own! Read on for the recap of Bands on the Ramp with Matty Charles.

MATTY:
"Bands on the Ramp night where do I even begin?"

Truthfully, I was a bit unsure how this was all gonna work, over my time working at Dailys we've been super limited with capacity in store due to the spicy cough... Around the start of March the government finally lifted restrictions!

As I skrrt'd up to 100 Gilbert St on my fixie, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel; the light was Forbsey, Tom (the brains behind this stellar evening) and Nutty (one of our team skaters) going hammer and tongs clearing the store to make an open space for the night ahead.

I asked Tom, "how many tickets have we sold?" naively thinking it could be too open and feel a bit empty, he replied "over 50 in presale with more heads expected to buy tix on the door tonight". This is when I knew we were in for some fun, so I helped load the fridge full of Coopers, Heaps Normal (non-alcoholic beer that despite the flack I'll cop for saying this, the XPA goes down the gullet nicely) and of course a nice selection of wines from the lords over at Five O’clock Somewhere!

Around 4pm the bands started rolling in, and I helped the Loopole boys tape symbols down to the ramp, because in their sound checks they were shaking more than Shakira's hips. In this time, a few homies had popped by to get in a pre-concert roll on the ramp and a bev or two.

The 745 rocked up fresh outta the school uniform and in some fire fits! Big boys, last resorts, some fast sunnies and without hearing a track yet - I was already a fan boy.

After they put down a trick or two on the ramp, it was almost time for things to kick off. Star Generation from Newy were soaking it all in with some drinks n’ ciggies on Gilbert as the people began to flood in.

I was slinging drinks and had shop team rider Massimo on the til (who was my saving grace, when Tom jammed the key in the til, but we won't get into that hahah).

Honestly, the funnest Friday I've had at Gilbert St Dailys. I loved seeing the store packed like a can of sardines, having crew skating when the bands were playing and selling drinks to families who were there to see their kids/cousins/whoever put on a hell of a show. Was a wholesome experience that I'm stoked to have been a part of.

Everyone I was serving was hyped, instantly asking, "when are we doing the next?" and my answer was & still is "Ask Tom that curly headed spunk on the soundboard".

Thanks Dailys for having me on for the ride!Bands on the Ramp at Daily Grind | Photo by Andre CastellucciPhoto by Andre Castellucci
